Mary Jane isn't just for smoking

As Germany changes its laws, cannabis growers are already preparing for home cultivation. And there were huge exhibitor and visitor numbers at the recent Mary Jane Cannabis Expo in Berlin.

Mary Jane isn't just for smoking

The legalisation of cannabis consumption has led to some unpredictable consequences. The German Insurance Association (GDV) recently warned about the unpredictable combination of alcohol and cannabis while driving. „Anyone who smokes and drinks at the same time should not be allowed to drive“, said the industry association. One might joke about indulging too much, but even small amounts of alcohol apparently intensify the effects of cannabis and increase the risk of accidents.

Pleasure, alongside business, was a major focus at the recent Mary Jane Cannabis Expo in Berlin. Organisers promised visitors and exhibitors from the thriving cannabis industry a vibrant festival, with plenty of music and a knowledge hub.

Mary Jane – using the name phonetically inspired by marijuana in the English-speaking stoner community – has grown to become Europe's largest cannabis fair. From its origins as a gathering in the alternative Kreuzberg district, Mary Jane has moved to the more establishment district of Charlottenburg.

At the Berlin exhibition grounds under the Funkturm, approximately 400 exhibitors showcased everything related to the exhilarating plant, over 20,000 square meters. Visitor numbers were estimated at 40,000 –double the 2023 figure. Only adults are allowed. Children and dogs must stay outside.

Booming sales of products related to home cultivation

Starting 1 July in Germany, the private cultivation of cannabis for personal use will also be permitted, under restrictions, for adults. Cultivation associations can then get underway. Yet even today, the industry is experiencing booming sales of products related to home cultivation. Year-round planting demands more than just green fingers. Irrigation and lighting are crucial factors.

Alongside startups, large companies are also making strides to conquer this new market. While the sector is still small, it is growing rapidly. Besides its use as medication, hemp is an important raw material in industry – replacing plastic and steel or serving as insulation in automobile manufacturing. Federal Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir (Greens) announced a legislative change in May that could boost the sector. The clause that threatens raids, fines, or even business closures due to even very low levels of the drug's active ingredient is slated to be eliminated.

The legalisation of cannabis has also raised new questions for Berlin's gastronomy scene. Is cannabis consumption allowed in pubs? Perhaps bartenders will end up going home high from passive smoking. Many restaurants have moved cannabis consumption outdoors. Yet, some beer gardens aim to completely avoid sweet-smelling clouds, establishing a cannabis-free zone. while other beer gardens are establishing completely cannabis-free zones. Friendly but firm signs prominently declare: „Please refrain from using cannabis products on these premises.“
