William „Bill“ Winters (59) has taken up the fight against climate change and is doing well at City Week in London. The boss of Standard Chartered can point out that large parts of important markets for his bank could be perished or become uninhabitable as a result of global warming. Those who are convinced of one thing can convince others. And so the former co-CEO of J.P. Morgan Chairman became Member of the Task Force on Scaling Voluntary Carbon Markets.When he took on the lead of Standard Chartered six years ago, he had to solve a problem. In view of double-digit growth rates, the bank had neglected costs. Winters saved where it does the least harm to business: at the top. A quarter of the highest paid employees — from the managing director upwards — were asked to leave the bank. This meant that significantly more savings could be made than by further layoffs in the counter staff. He also has unconventional ideas for structuring emissions trading. Anyone who does business with marketing CO2 certificates that make no real contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions should dress warmly. Winters is serious.
